Port project to go ahead as planned

Audit report awaited on Jaber Bridge

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 2: The implementation of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port project is going on as planned, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting Minister of Public Works and State Minister for Municipality Affairs Dr Fadhel Safar. Safar affirmed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently organizing meetings with the concerned ministries to clarfiy the issue and take the necessary measures to ensure the smooth execution of the project. He disclosed the implementation of the first phase of the project has started and his ministry has not received any official instruction to halt it.

Earlier reports quoted, senior government officials as saying that Kuwait and Iraq have agreed on implementation of the project and that the port will be one and half kilometers away from the Iraqi canal, indicating the project will not impede navigational movement by Iraq. The officials according to Al Rai daily added Kuwait will continue the work, following a review of the fourth phase of the project. This means less than 25 buoys will be built instead of the original 60 buoys indicated in the plan to avert any impediment to Iraq’s navigational movement.

In another development, Safar said the ministry is waiting for a response from the State Audit Bureau on the Jaber Bridge project. He added his ministry will submit the bureau’s report to the Parliament but it has yet to receive an official letter or response from the bureau. On the Mishref sewage plant, Safar admitted there are certain technical issues that must be addressed before the station resumes operation. He said the ministry decided to operate the station on an experimental basis right after completing all the necessary techinical procedures.

Safar added the Fatwa and Legislation Department has finalized a draft bill on the establishment of an independent food authority. He said the bill has been forwarded to the Kuwait Municipality for review and submission to the Cabinet, which will in turn refer it to the Parliament for final approval.
