MPs step in to separate brawling leaders

Baghdad, June 12 (AKnews) – Tensions between rival blocs led to blows being struck today in the parliament cafeteria, said a parliamentary source.

The source who wished to remain unnamed said the scuffle broke out when a leader from the State of Law (SLC), Kamal al-Saadi, allegedly hit al-Iraqiya spokesman, Haider al-Mulla, with his walking stick.

“Saadi beat Mulla with his cane, and when he tried to react, other MPs pulled them apart,” the source said.

According to the source, the fight stemmed from derogatory remarks made by Mulla about Saadi in a TV interview on Saturday evening.

“Mulla said in the media that I am a liar. I asked him to apologize, but he didn't,” Saadi told AFP, whilst denying any exchange of blows between them.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accused al-Iraqiya last week of attempting to sabotage government projects in order to portray him as an incompetent leader.

Official sources have been cited saying that Maliki openly holds al-Iraqiya leader Ayad Allawi responsible for masterminding the anti-government protests that took place on Friday in Baghdad and across the Iraqi provinces.

Allawi lashed out at Maliki on Friday evening saying that he had only assured the premiership because of Iran’s backing and warned his fellow Iraqis of the PM’s dictatorial tendencies.
